adventures in awesomeness…

Things Are Well for the Family Cox

Today started out as any other. I woke up with an unbelievably full bladder and wild hair. Ten minutes later my niece and nephew showed up (we’re going swimming at Grandpa’s today) and we all piled into the car to get coffee. Someone asked me if I was always a superwoman or if it’s something that happens after you become a mom. I laughed. You’d have to ask my sister — who is the real owner of three kids. I just rent them out occasionally. Then unexpected things started to occur. Matt runs back into the house with a huge package — ADDRESSED TO ME!! Yay. I never get packages. That doesn’t stop me from opening Matt’s, but it’s nice to have your name on the box. It’s from my mom-in-law. For my birthday (in 2weeks) she got me a Wacom tablet. BAD ASS! For those of you that are unfamiliar with the term, here’s a photo:

Awesome drawing power at the tip of a digital pen.
No more drawing and editing with the mouse!

Then, after Matt makes me swear not to touch anything until he gets home (I think he’s just as excited as I am, heh), I check my email and have an conversation from the curator Blakey Blass of RAG Co-op in San Francisco. They are interested in carrying my art on consignment! Are you serious!!! AWESOME!!! Totally awesome. And I have 4 new pieces finished, one 1/2 finished new piece, and 7 new sketches completed with two more ideas on the back burner.

Finally, Matt contacts me to let me know that he has sold 4 new prints. WHOO HOO!! Now we can buy new art supplies without cutting in on the new budget. Mmmm… art supplies. Hehehehe.

And of course baby Jaxon has made a full recovery from his 101.4 fever. He’s walking around and getting into EVERYTHING again, which I wouldn’t trade for all the sick snuggles. Healthy snuggles on the other hand… well I’ll just have to steal those when I can get them!!

A Good Day to Be Excited!

We’re having boy!

I’m 20 weeks (approx. 4 1/2 months) pregnant and yesterday Matt and I went in for a very extensive ultrasound where the technician said she was 95% sure that it was a boy. Another boy. I knew that Matt would give me all boys. That doesn’t mean we’re having another. Noooo, two was enough for my parents and it’s enough for me. It’s going to be exciting for sure. Hahah! We are very very happy – despite what everyone thinks. We’ve decided to name him Milo. (I’ll have to learn that song from the Phantom Tollbooth, LOL.) And I guess I’d better get started on decorating the boys’ room. Oh, I can’t wait!!

Last night after my heroic husband stayed up way too late again fixing my computer (yay, I have internet and networking capabilities!) he wakes me up to let me know that I have sold another print — and it’s been paid for (the last person to buy a print didn’t complete their sale). How super exciting for me.

I also decided to put my nose to the grindstone and finish two more pieces…

The Birds
acrylic and ink on 8×8 canvas panel

Bathroom View
acrylic and ink on 8×8 canvas panel

I’m not sure if I will sell the original of The Birds because I made some changes to the original sketch that I stupidly made in sharpie ink and the acrylic won’t cover it up. So you can see faint lines of the original sketch — annoying!! But I should be able to fix it on a print… We’ll see.

I’m starting on new pieces today. I want to have a total of at least 10 finished works by Sunday — when I reveal my new set of works onto the world.. hahaha…! Of course, who knows if anyone’s even looking?

Art is fun. Babies are fun — and cuddly when they’re sick. My little Jaxon has a fever. He’s a bit of a whiner but god, he’s affectionate. I love him so much. Mmmm… babies.

Busy, busy, busy

The latest piece in my new collection…

Welcome Home
acrylic and ink on 8×8 canvas panel

It makes me happy. Which is a good thing. I even explored playing with a third color. I wish the brown didn’t come out so dark. I’m learning that pretty much all saturated colors need to be lightened to get the desired effect. Still, it’s not too bad. Hee, hee, hee! I love making art!

Second…. After a very lethargic weekend (where I believe the only thing I did was “walk the mall” and eat out at restaurants) I finally stopped fighting the urge to do some housecleaning and got to work Monday rearranging my living room.

It was so cluttered before. The entertainment center took up the only free wall so the couch was barricading the fireplace and a built in bookcase. The entertainment center is gone now and the TV is up on the mantle (see Matt — it worked!) and the couch is where the TV used to be.

Our living room is so much bigger and cleaner. The feng shui is totally happening in this room now. I love, love, love it!!!!

Red Umbrella and Other Works

Introducing the latest piece in my 2008 Jessielah collection….

Red Umbrella
acrylic and ink on 8×8 canvas panel

Hurray, it’s finished and I am very pleased. Although it seems pretty simple and straight forward, it took a long time to finish (I did not want to mess it up) and to get everything just right.

Also, mixing paints is a pain in the ass. I am hopelessly trying to salvage “Princess Bree” which I took from one giant, freaky handed, booby bodied princess to a smaller princess and maybe someone else (or maybe that person will become a cloud…) I don’t know. Then I made the mistake of falling in love with a dark purple… that dries black. Then I didn’t mix enough paint.. so the piece is two (slightly) different colors.****Sigh.**** Needless to say, it’s on the back burner now. I’ve come to realize (as I started my third piece today) that I do better when I just do and don’t think so much about things. My first instincts are usually right on the money. Art (for me) is kind of like taking the SAT — go with your first guess because it’s probably right.

Anyhow… here’s a preview of my latest creation, which was inspired by me on the toilet.

Lovely, I know. But I like it. I was going to call it “Stinky Flip flops” because I’ve worn these one pair of shoes since April but “Bathroom View” makes me giggle. I’ve yet to decide what color to paint the flip flops… Matt sent me some suggestions but they had LOTS of colors (at least 3 new ones) that I would have to mix… UGH… that’s a fuckubus waiting to happen. So I think I’ll go with 2 colors, white tile-faces.

Why is my baby still awake??? He’s just in his crib playing through his nap. I guess I’d better get up and get him.

I’m working on a grand RE-Opening of my Etsy store and my web site, etc… Hopefully should be finished by the time my birthday rolls around. Will send out details as things progress… ok, time to get baby Jax.

Quiet Time

I woke up to the sound of kids calling my name. Stumbling to the door, I stepped in dog pee (thanks Wally). Then before I could do anything else, Jax announced that he was awake… and hungry. And is pretty much how the day progressed until now. I am so glad that I have the rest of the week off from babysitting. I love my niece and nephew… I really do. But today there was just too much going on and for some reason, my hopes for 90 minutes of quiet time never happened. My dad was out and about so I couldn’t drop the kids to go swimming (like we’d talked about earlier) while Jax took a nap. Then Jax wouldn’t fall asleep, spending my precious 90 minutes playing in his crib while the kids argued and complained about not doing what they wanted to be doing (playing xbox and having me help with arts and crafts). I had my own arts and crafts to accomplish, which I am proud to say: is finished… in theory. I experimented with some color on the computer so I wouldn’t mess up my original canvas painting and it came out pretty well. Too bad the red I want to use is toxic so no good painting around crabby kids and babies. I’m also working on my second piece, which may be reconfigured because Matt said my character’s body looked like gross, fatty breasts. Excellent….

Anyhow… I have a delicious DeLuca’s pizza headed to my front door which I plan to enjoy with little Jaxon while watching back episodes of Judge Judy. Ahh… Finally, my quiet time has arrived.

PS: Check out cute new pics of Jaxon at Matt’s blog.

Too Many Projects

I’m excited. August must be the month of creative flow. It all began when I started reading those Stephanie Meyer vampire books. They inspired me to pull out the old laptop and to start writing again. I even rearranged my bedroom and am shopping for curtains. Maybe one day I’ll finally paint the trim and install that ceiling fan… but let’s not hold our breaths. And while I still haven’t finished the kitchen, I want to reorganize the living room (thanks Liz & Tommy) and do something with the dinning room/office so it’s not such a clusterf&%k.

And I’ve started working on a new art project. Out of the blue, after several months of sitting untouched on, someone bought a print. I pretty much freaked out since I had done no promoting or anything since our move to San Diego in April. I didn’t even have my computer set up. Matt and I scrambled to get the print out and before I could stick stamps on the first print, someone bought another. And the next day I was asked if I wanted two of my pieces (“Lillian” of the Only Children series and “Half Empty”) to be showcased in the Design This Design That Magazine . I will be featured along with several other artist in the September Issue.

Very exciting!
So I’m back to the drawing table and trying my hand at painting on canvas. I’m a pen and paper (and occasionally watercolor) kind of girl, but I’ve decided to branch out and try some new things. (Thanks to my booble for the inspiration.) I am deathly afraid that the paint (I’m starting with a box of hand-me-down acrylics) will ruin the drawing so as a precaution, I’m scanning it into the computer first. But I’m not going to get wild with the color or anything so hopefully everything will turn out okay. And maybe it will generate some new interest in my work. But painting is tons of fun and a great way to fill that creative need I have. And it will save my husband from having to endure all of the half-finished projects in our house.
